Trelleborg’s New Polyurethane Materials Meet Future Standards

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions launches its polyurethane materials, Zurcon® Z53 and Zurcon® Z54, which conform to the latest EU REACH environmental standards coming into force from November 2017. In addition, they meet customers’ requirements for higher operating temperatures.

REACH is a European Union regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & restriction of Chemicals. Zurcon® Z53 and Zurcon® Z54 have been developed over a long research and development cycle to meet the demanding requirements of the European Commission regarding substances prohibited unless an exemption applies or an authorization is granted.

Zurcon® Z53 and Zurcon® Z54 will supersede the renowned Zurcon® Z51 and Zurcon® Z52 as the materials of choice for slipper seals and scrapers used in demanding fluid power linear and rotary applications, including the tough conditions faced in mobile, construction and mining applications.

The materials boast all the usual characteristics of Trelleborg’s Zurcon® range of polyurethane materials, such as toughness and rigidity, as well as wear and scratch resistance and demonstrate the same performance characteristics of the materials they replace. In addition, the maximum operating temperature of Zurcon® Z53 and Z54 has been raised by +20 °C in water and water-based fluids; from +40 °C to +60 °C.

Bosch presented the coveted awards before an audience of some 100 representatives of the supply industry. The theme of this year’s award ceremony was “Partners in success.”

Turcon® Roto Glyd Ring® V is a premium double-acting rotary seal with outstanding performance and reliability in rotary applications. Reduced contact surfaces under all operating conditions significantly improve friction and wear characteristics without compromising sealing performance. Designed for continuous service at high and low PV values, the seal also gives improved performance in oscillating conditions or where there are frequent changes in pressure and/or velocity.

It is the product of extensive research and development to create a new seal that excels in high pressure and temperature applications. Turcon® Roto Glyd Ring® V runs with low torque at all pressures from 0.5 MPa / 72.5 psi and above with low sensitivity to pressure increases from 0.5 to 20 MPa / 72.5 to 2900 psi. Testing shows a PV twice as high as other bi-directional seals and 50% lower friction.

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Helps Develop Revolutionary Subsea Product

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions goes ‘above and beyond’ in helping to solve a complex subsea challenge when an effective sealing solution was required for a revolutionary connector.
As a leading global supplier of polymer-based critical sealing solutions, Trelleborg was asked to create a seal that would work inside a pioneering new product which was developed by Subsea Technologies Ltd (STL).

Subsea Product

STL’s two inch Hydraulically Retractable Subsea Coupler assists in creating its XR Connector’s unequalled high-angle release capability, which has no maximum riser angle limit. It was designed to deliver radically improved vessel safety, reduce environmental risk and decrease costs by greatly boosting a vessel’s operating window.

STL had previously developed small bore retractable couplers, used as sub-components in its unique XR Connector, however, scaling up to a large two inch bore to allow for choke and kill lines passing through, posed a number of major challenges.

In order for the full potential and functionality of the two-inch coupler to work, it needed a seal to be developed that would work in harmony with the coupler, the world’s first of that size, with a hydraulically retractable element.

Trelleborg set about meeting requirements and developed custom versions of its Turcon® Captive Glyd Ring® with XploR™ V9T82 elastomer material and Turcon® Stepseal® 2A CR with PEEK corner reinforcement rings.

The Turcon® Stepseal® 2A CR is a new standard corner reinforced rod/piston seal for single-acting use and has many advantages, such as its anti-tilt design and that the dimensions of the seal body and corner reinforcement ring can be modified to facilitate installation.

Andrew Longdon, Technical Manager for Trelleborg Sealing Solutions in the UK, said: “Throughout the process we constantly had to think about the safety issues and challenges that are frequently faced when working with heavy duty engagement of subsea equipment.

“We worked with STL as the team conducted a very lengthy test programme including a full PR-2 temperature and pressure cycling programme along with endurance cycle testing on the products in accordance with the ISO 10423 standard.

“STL also conducted two disconnects with 10,000 psi bore pressure. This was all completed with one set of seals, which I think is some achievement.

“We pride ourselves on innovation and relished this opportunity to work with STL in a bid to find an effective sealing solution and ensure the two inch Hydraulically Retractable Subsea Coupler was working to its full capability.”

Not only does the coupler provide new opportunities for remote emergency release system designs for subsea applications, it also enables people to be removed from stab plate engagement functions on the surface. By being hydraulically retractable, it allows the heavy duty engagement of equipment both on surface and subsea to be separated from the comparatively delicate engagement of control system interfaces.

STL’s Managing Director Drummond Lawson said: “We knew Trelleborg would be able to solve the challenge of finding a durable and robust seal to work in harmony with our product.

“Not only have they gone above and beyond in meeting expectations of the brief we outlined, but we were also impressed with the service we received throughout the process. We are by no means Trelleborg’s biggest client – but the support we received has been second to none. At every stage of the process a member of the Trelleborg team kept us fully informed from prototype development right through to bringing the product to market.

“This was no easy challenge and without Trelleborg, we would not have been able to produce what we believe to be the first coupler of this size ever to be made with a hydraulically retractable element, which we are certain will create opportunities for our clients beyond just its use in our XR Connector.”

The coupler is fully Lloyds design verified and qualified to 3,000m (10,000ft) water depth, rated to 10,000psi hydraulic bore pressure and up to 5,000psi hydraulic function pressure

Trelleborg acquires manufacturer of advanced composite components

Trelleborg has, through its business area Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, signed an agreement to acquire the U.S.-based privately-owned Automated Dynamics that specializes in the manufacturing of advanced composite components.

Composites are a strategic, adjacent technology for Trelleborg with high potential in a multiple of industries. Completion of the transaction is subject to the approval of the relevant authorities.The company is located in Niskayuna, New York. Sales amounted to approximately SEK 65 M in 2016. This bolt-on acquisition is part of Trelleborg’s strategy to strengthen its positions in attractive market segments.

“I am thrilled to present this acquisition. The acquired company provides key capabilities in composites, bringing new competences to Trelleborg Sealing Solutions. We already see many opportunities for new products, applications and materials for the aerospace and oil & gas markets, and in the long-term also for other markets. The acquired company’s expertise in automation of the production of composite products is impressive and should be possible to leverage into other manufacturing facilities,” says Claus Barsøe, President of the Trelleborg Sealing Solutions business area.

The transaction is expected to be finalized in the third quarter of 2017.

New CAD Models App Lets You View Products in 3-D from Mobile Devices

A new app allows users to view, rotate and zoom to examine Trelleborg Sealing Solutions products in 3-D wherever you may be.

By using the CAD Models App from Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, detailed renderings can be interactively viewed to more comprehensively understand the selected product.

Simply choose the required part from the in-app catalog, which can be done more quickly by utilizing the search function or by filtering by product group. From here, detailed product information is shown, and the models can be rotated, shrunk and enlarged to give a full view of the product’s geometry and design features. Users can at this stage select a part number and material, then send the actual CAD files to an email address in a variety of file formats.

Developed in partnership with TraceParts, the app aims to make CAD drawing more intuitive and easy to understand – whether in the office or on the go.

Trelleborg’s Latest Perfluoroelastomer Material Meets Demanding Enhanced Oil Recovery Requirements

HOUSTON, TX and FORT WAYNE, IN (May 1, 2017) –Trelleborg Sealing Solutions uses the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston as a platform to launch its latest Isolast® perfluoroelastomer material development.

Specifically engineered for the offshore industry, Isolast® J9554 matches up to the most demanding of upstream requirements and is ideally suited for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) systems.

Chris Busby, Product Manager for Isolast® material, says: “To achieve extended sealing life in demanding environments, it is important that sealing materials specified match up to the conditions likely to be faced. A particular focus for development of Isolast® J9554 was ensuring long seal life in EOR systems. This includes thermal recovery where heat is introduced to the oil reservoir to reduce the viscosity of the oil and cyclic steam injection, which is used extensively in heavy-oil reservoirs and tar sands to thin oil and enhance its ability to flow.”

Extensive testing was undertaken to prove that Isolast® J9554 can operate at the extreme temperatures and pressures encountered in critical upstream applications, including high temperature steam environments. The material exhibited excellent retention of physical properties following high temperature steam aging for one week at +300°C / +572°F.

Isolast® J9554 delivers exceptional chemical resistance and high thermal stability in harsh oil and gas environments. A high hardness, high modulus material with excellent long-term retention of physical properties, it is ideally suited to high pressure applications where high thermal stability and resistance to aggressive well bore chemicals such as amine-based corrosion inhibitors, steam and acids, are vital to ensure reliable seal performance.

The material demonstrates excellent compression set retention at high temperatures with temperature resistance from +14 °F/ -10 °C to +527 °F/ +275 °C with excursions to +572 °F/ +300 °C. In addition to EOR applications, the material is also suited to use in downhole tools and chemical dosing pumps.

Trelleborg Joins the Smart Data Innovation Lab to Move Further Toward Industry 4.0

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has joined the Smart Data Innovation Lab (SDIL) and its first project with the lab is ‘Advanced Condition Monitoring for Sealing Solutions’.

The main goal of the SDIL is to accelerate innovation cycles using smart data approaches and it provides extensive support to collaborative research projects.

Trelleborg’s partners on this project are Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and IBM.

Driven from Germany and operating across Europe, the SDIL initiative offers big data researchers unique access to a large variety of big data and in-memory technologies. Industry and science collaborate closely to find hidden value in big data and generate smart data. Projects focus on the strategic research areas of Industry 4.0, Energy, Smart Cities and personalized Medicine.

Johannes Kunze von Bischhoffshausen, Manager Digital Transformation and Internet of Things at Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, says: “Industry 4.0 and the internet of things are becoming an important focus for manufacturers worldwide and there is a call for products to become smarter and more intelligent whatever and wherever they may feature.

Trelleborg Sealing Solutions is continuously working on the measuring and predicting of the condition of seals and it therefore runs a wide variety of instrumented tests on its test rigs. Measurements such as temperatures, speed, pressures and vibration are captured in very high frequencies. By leveraging Big Data Technology from its SDIL partners, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and IBM, Trelleborg will apply advanced machine learning in order to gain new insights, reduce testing costs and lay the foundation for advanced condition monitoring of sealing solutions in the field.
