Seal and bearing materials conform to 3-A Sanitary Standard

Trelleborg’s Turcon® MF6 and Zurcon® Z431 PEEK™ seal and bearing materials have third party verified declaration of conformance to the latest version of 3-A Sanitary Standard 20-27. Capable of withstanding high temperatures and the cleaning regimes used in food and beverage manufacturing, the compounds provide excellent tribological and sealing capabilities, offering real benefits in terms of extending seal and bearing life in hygienic dynamic applications.

Specifically formulated for food contact, pharmaceutical and medical applications

Suitable for a wide range of seal profiles, scrapers and wear rings, Turcon® MF6 is part of the Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Turcon® MF range of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) based sealing materials specifically formulated for food contact, pharmaceutical and medical applications. While the recently launched Zurcon® Z431 PEEK™, is ideal for valve and bearing applications.

“As far as we know, we are the only seal and bearing supplier who has undergone and passed a third party verification inspection for the 3-A Sanitary Standard number 20 for thermoplastic materials,” says Ferdinand Schwabe, CPI Segment Manager for Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Europe. “Up until 2003 the 3-A Sanitary Standard could be self-certificated. Now, to be listed on the 3-A website and receive the authorization to use the 3-A symbol, you have to complete evaluation through a third party who is accredited by 3-A Sanitary Standards Incorporated. This is important for many of our key customers in the food and beverage sector.”

Conforming to a variety of standards

The Turcon® MF6 and Zurcon® Z431 PEEK™ material passed 3-A cleanability response and product immersion tests according to 3-A Sanitary Standard number 20-27. This is in addition to passing migration tests for aqueous, acidic and fatty food in repeated contact according to directive 2002/72/EC as well as sensory tests passed at 90 cm2 per liter/ 52.8 in2 per gallon surface/ volume ratio at +95°C/ +203°F for 30 minutes and FDA extraction tests according to 21CFR177.2415. Turcon® MF6 compound is also listed by NSF International as conforming to the requirements of NSF/ANSI Standard 51 – Food Equipment Materials.

The 3-A certification applies to seals supplied through the Logistics Center Europe in Germany, which distributes product to the majority of customers in Europe. The materials are available in a wide range of seal profiles, scrapers, wear rings, bearing and valve components to suit specific application needs.

Seals help blow molding machines work longer

Guangzhou Tech-Long, the largest manufacturer of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottle blow molding machines in China, needed a sealing solution for the dispenser located in the center of a blow molding machine, the core part of the machine where failure can lead to high costs due to lost production time. To achieve optimum performance the choice was a specially developed Turcon® PTFE based compound. A number of seals were specified including a custom Turcon® Roto Glyd Ring®, with a unique pressure relieving function.

The aim is to maximize production

The sealing system within the dispenser needed to operate in 1 to 4 MPa/ 145 to 580 psi dry air pressure at rotational speeds of 150 mm/s / six in/s non-stop for between 16 to 20 hours per day.

Successfully sealing dry air

Dry air is a difficult medium to seal. To successfully do this the seal must initially demonstrate a very smooth and tight dynamic sealing surface after a short run in. It must then have outstanding wear resistance in poorly lubricated conditions.

Sealing configurations from Trelleborg Sealing Solutions are now successfully operating in Tech-Long PET bottle blow molding machines globally. Tech-Long and Trelleborg Sealing Solutions continue to work together on new developments.
